LCD Laptop Screen or LED Laptop Screen Inside my Laptop?

Alot of laptops that have been manufactured in the last 18 months have used either LCD or LED screens, this is because LED screens are better alround for electrical consumption. All manufacturers will eventually switch all production over to LED screens only. They are not interchangable as the connections are totally different, so you need to know which one you have in originally.

What is the correct screen for your laptop?

On some laptop makes/models you can check this without taking the Plastic Screen Bezel (surround) off. But first let us explain the visual difference between the two types of screen.

1. Both LCD (CCFL Backlight) and LED (LED Backlight) Screens visually look exactly the same when you first look at the screen, and both look exactly the same when they are broken / smashed, they both leave an inky splodge over the screen when smashed so don't let this convince you that you have one or the other.

2. LCD (CCFL Backlight) Screens are used in conjunction with a Screen Inverter, as the CCFL Backlight requires a high voltage to operate, the LED (LED Backlight) Screens don't require this high voltage and a Screen Inverter is not required.

3. Because LCD ( CCFL Backlight) Screens require the high voltage to power the Backlight they use more electricity and generally from new the battery would only last 3-4 hours. LED (LED Backlight) Screens don't use this high voltage and the battery life from new would have been much better, between 6-8 hours. This is one of the main reasons that manufacturers are switching over to LED Screens.

Okay so how to find out which one you have?

The easiest way to check, but not always possible, is to pull back the Screen Plastics Bezel (surround), Take a peep inside and see if you see an inverter at the bottom of the screen.

Just so you know, the image below is a screen inverter, a circuit board which on average measures about 150mm x 10mm. The Inverter always resides at the bottom of the screen and always in the middle:

Now you know what an inverter looks like, i'm going to show you an image of the Laptop Screen Bezel being pulled back to show you how to determine which type of screen is fitted inside your Laptop, This is possible on 90% of laptops.

Example below is of a HP CQ60 Laptop with LCD SCREEN fitted.

Just pull the bezel back with your fingers to reveal if the laptop has an inverter or it doesn't.

INVERTER PRESENT = LCD (CCFL BACKLIGHT)

NO INVERTER PRESENT = LED (LED BACKLIGHT)

If you can't do this because the Laptop you require a screen for is in the 10% of laptops that can't just pull the bezel back on then you will need to remove the Bezel to reveal the same thing as in the picture below. You will find our Laptop Screen Replacement Instructions very helpful in removing the Screen Bezel.

Don’t miss the sunshine! Get your laptop outside to make the most of the summer.

Standard LDC laptop or TV screens are not designed to work outside. The glare from the sun means that it’s practically impossible to see what’s on the screen. You can use an anti-glare screen to fit over your existing screen, or buy a laptop hood that should cut down on the light that hits the screen. Other options could be to sit under a canopy or large umbrella and to wear sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat while working.

Apart from the glare from sunshine, high temperatures can be seriously affect your laptop. Never leave your laptop in direct sunlight or in a hot car. It is unlikely but the casing would be in danger of melting. This applies to any other mobile equipment such as mobile phones too. Humidity as well as heat can also cause damage to your laptop. Moisture can find its way into your internal computer components without your knowledge. Take steps in advance to protect your data and back it up on to an external hard drive or DVD, before you leave the office. A good tip is to put your data onto an external drive while you are working outdoors as it’s easier to keep protected.

Keep your laptop cool by using a stand with a built-in fan. Using a stand allows air to circulate all around the laptop minimising the risk of overheating. A final note is to always use a properly fitted laptop bag to transport it in. It’ll not only insulate the laptop and keep it clean and dry, but padded laptop bags will protect it from bumps and bangs while in transit.

Replacing your laptop screen shouldn’t be traumatic if you just follow the following steps.

Once you’ve checked that it is the laptop screen and not your motherboard or video components that are at fault, removing your laptop screen should be a fairly simple job to do by yourself.

1) First of all make sure you’ve removed the power source, battery and unplugged the laptop from any electrical socket.

2) Find and remove all the bezel screws. The bezel is the grooved or slanting surface on the bottom rim of the screen.

3) Remove the bezel at the bottom of the laptop screen by carefully working your fingers between the rim and the screen. Then, pull gently all around the edge of the bezel until it snaps off. Don’t force it to move, if it doesn’t come off with relatively firm force check you haven’t missed any screws.

4) Once the screen is off the manufacturers label on the back should show you exactly what you need to buy to replace it. The part number will ensure you get exactly the right replacement.

5) Take the screen off the laptop completely by disconnecting the cables connecting it to the laptop. The video cable is a long ribbon taped to the back. Make sure you also disconnect the power cable between the display and the inverter.

6) Install the new replacement laptop screen by reversing the process above then screw it in and power your laptop back again to check that is all works correctly.

Replacing your laptop screen yourself once you’ve bought a new one from Computer Basement will save a few pounds and give you another 12 months guarantee on your screen for peace of mind.

Bags and Sleeves are Great for Protecting Laptop Screens and Making a Statement at the Same Time

Our laptops and laptop screens have always needed protecting from accidental damage. Computers are fairly fragile things, but we're increasingly taking our laptops with us everywhere we go, which means laptop bags and sleeves are more important than ever. And the good news is, it's no longer a case of 'any colour you want, as long as it's black'.

There's now a huge range of bags, cases and sleeves available on the market to protect laptop screens from cracking, computer cases from being damaged and vital hardware from breaking. And they don't have to be boring any more.

A splash of colour

For a start, many manufacturers are now offering bags and cases in almost as many colours as laptop screens can display. You don't have to stick with black, or grey – why not try a fluorescent tone, or even a bright neon pink or green?

There's no need to be limited to one colour, either. Many cases and bags offer two tones, and others are reversible so you can alter your case depending on your mood that day.

Bold designs

Your handbag, briefcase or satchel can say a lot about your fashion tastes and personality, so why shouldn't your laptop case? Fire up those laptop screens and search the internet, or even browse the high street, and you'll find there's a lot of choice out there and some really unique bags and sleeves. You could find a simple, striking pattern; or you might go for something fun and cartoon-like.

On top of that you'll see the latest styles of illustration and graphic design applied to laptop cases and bags, all designed to make a functional item just that little bit more fashionable.

Strike a balance of form and function

One note of caution, however: a case, sleeve or bag should always be able to protect the fragile laptop screens and components it's carrying. No matter how good it looks, the product you choose should provide great security for your machine above all else, so you can look good and feel secure at the same time.

Find great laptop screens with Computer Basement

Acer Laptop Screens-What to Look for

If you have chosen a particular brand of laptop you may think the decisions end there. However there is more to choosing a laptop than simply selecting a brand. On first glance all screens may look the same but this is not the case.

Acer Laptop Screens-Matte or Shiny?

One of the main choices when it comes to Acer laptop screens whether to go for a matte screen or a shiny one. Most modern laptops have a shiny reflective screen and this can have its advantages and disadvantages depending on how and where you intend to use it. The shiny screen enhances the laptop by making it appear more attractive to an onlooker and this is an added bonus for those who intend to use their Acer laptop screens indoors. For those who intent to enjoy their Acer laptop screens outside this glossy finish tends to be quite reflective and as a result can make the data difficult to read. Glossy screens tend to show finger prints more than matte screens and may require a little more maintenance.

Acer Laptop Screens-Size Matters

Depending what you use your laptop for you may require a screen that is larger or smaller than the average size. The size of screen you choose will also depend on your individual budget as the larger the screen the bigger the price tag. The size of your screen may affect the resolution so it is best to check that the resolution is right before you choose a size. If you travel a lot you may benefit from a compact model that has a small surface area as it will be easy to transport.

Acer Laptop Screens-How to Protect Yours

Laptops are portable by nature and for this reason they require a higher level of protection than your home computer. Acer laptop screens are vulnerable to a whole host of things including water damage, scratches and accidental damages.

Acer Laptop Screens-Have you got it covered?

If you own a laptop computer a case should be your next purchase. A case will protect Acer laptop screens from minor damages that could occur at any time. Dropping your laptop can do serious damage to Acer laptop screens and a simple case can help to cushion the fall. If you are abroad the dangers of having your laptop with you increase and there are many more things to protect your laptop from. For example if you are checking your email by the pool be aware of how close you leave it to the water. Water damage can be fatal to Acer laptop screens. Never leave your laptop on the floor where it can be stood on by passers by. Be wary of consuming liquids around you laptop as one spill could lead to a hefty repair bill. Lastly if your laptop does get damaged while abroad never try to fix your Acer laptop screens yourself. This could damage the laptop further and end up costing you more. Always seek professional help from a computer specialist.

Protect your Laptop from Theft

Theft is also another worry for those who take their laptops away with them. However there are certain things you can do to prevent theft. Always know where your laptop is and never leave it unattended. Always make sure you think of a complex password for your Acer laptop screens so that if your laptop is stolen your personal information is not vulnerable.
A Few Ways to Make Laptop Screens Last Longer and Work Better

Cleaning, a gentle touch and using the right accessories will all help extend the life of your display.

If laptop screens break, go dark or generally call it quits, it doesn't necessarily mean the whole computer is now defunct. There are plenty of ways of fixing the problem. However, a smarter (and cheaper) option is always to keep them in good working order in the first place, and there are a few simple techniques for doing this.

Be gentle

Laptop screens need a gentle touch. Hardware is a lot sturdier than it used to be, but repeated jabbing at the screen, tapping at it with pencils and general prodding will almost certainly reduce the life of the display. Try to avoid making contact with the screen, as too much pressure or sharp impacts will dramatically impact on performance.

Keep it clean

A build up of dirt, grease and even simple dust can end up damaging your screen over time. Marks on laptop screens can tempt users to rub and scrub away at the surface in order to remove them, which increases the risk of accidental damage. You can reduce the risks with regular cleaning using the correct cloths and sprays, which are available online or on the high street.

The other bonus of regular cleaning is that the display will be sharper and clearer, reducing the need to turn up the brightness controls on the screen – which may cause damage after prolonged use.

Protect your machine

Nothing kills laptop screens (and laptops) faster than being dropped, so obviously the important thing is to be careful when moving them around. However, accidents happen and extensive damage could be avoided by using a sturdy case when transporting your laptop. The right sleeve or case will protect the fragile components of your computer and save you a hefty repair bill.

Finally, make sure you keep food and drink away from your computer! It poses risks to the interior of the machine, naturally, but drinks spilled or sprayed onto laptop screens could permanently damage the surface, so keep those cans and cups of coffee well away.
